COVID-19 Vaccines

COVID-19 Vaccines and Boosters

VA is providing COVID-19 vaccines, as authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Supply varies by facility. Get more information about COVID-19 vaccines at VA.

VA is now offering Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine booster shots to Veterans, spouses and caregivers who have already received a full series of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine at least six months ago. Not all VA facilities are offering Pfizer booster shots. Learn more about COVID-19 booster shots in VA.

You can also receive your Pfizer booster outside of VA. You can locate a vaccine site at https://www.vaccines.gov/search/. Make sure to take your CDC COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card when you go!

We continue to encourage all eligible individuals to get vaccinated.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIRD DOSE COVID-19 VACCINATIONS

VHA is following CDC guidance in recommending certain moderately or severely immunocompromised people get a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine if they previously received a primary course of either Pfizer or Moderna.

Your healthcare provider will let you know if it is recommended you receive a third dose and will provide instructions on how to get it.

If recommended for a third dose, it is important to receive the same vaccine previously administered. If you received Pfizer previously, you should get Pfizer for your third dose. If you received Moderna previously, you should get Moderna for your third dose.

Moderately and severely immunocompromised patients include:
·        Active treatment for solid tumor and hematologic malignancies
·        Receipt of solid-organ transplant and taking immunosuppressive therapy
·        Receipt of CAR-T-cell or hematopoietic stem cell transplant (within 2 years of transplantation or taking immunosuppression therapy)
·        Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (e.g., DiGeorge, Wiskott-Aldrich syndromes)
·        Advanced or untreated HIV infection
·        Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids (i.e., >20mg prednisone or equivalent per day), alkylating agents, antimetabolites, transplant-related immunosuppressive drugs, cancer chemotherapeutic agents classified as severely immunosuppressive, TNF blockers, and other biologic agents that are immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory

At this time, people who received the Jansen (Johnson & Johnson) single dose vaccine SHOULD NOT get additional doses of Pfizer or Moderna.
Our facilities are now offering vaccinations to all Veterans who are patients at James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital & Clinic, regardless of age or medical condition.
Patients can contact the Tampa Call Center at (813) 558-3999 to schedule the 3rd dose.
