Minority Veterans Program

The Minority Veterans Program (MVP) was established under Public Law 103-446 in 1994 to address the unique circumstances and special needs of minority Veterans. James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital is dedicated to ensuring all Veterans are treated fairly, respectfully and receive quality care regardless of race, origin, religion or gender.

What Does The MVPC Do?

The Minority Veterans Program Coordinator (MVPC) serves as the principal advisor to the Healthcare System Director on issues and concerns related to healthcare services that affects minority Veterans.

Veterans the MVPC Serves:

James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital Minority Veterans Program services all Veterans included but not limited to:

  • African Americans
  • Asian Americans
  • Hispanic Americans
  • Native Americans, including American Indians and Alaskan Indians
  • Native Hawaiians
  • Pacific Island Americans

Program Objectives Includes:

  • Promote the use of VA benefits, programs and services
  • Assess the needs of minority veterans and make recommendation for   improving the delivery of care
  • Identify barriers to care
  • Promote an atmosphere in which minority Veterans are treated with dignity and respect
  • Review statistical information on minority populations

Individual Consultation

The MVPC is available to meet one-on-one with veterans and their families. The program stresses the need for open discussion between the Program Coordinator and the veterans served. The confidentiality of all conversations is ensured.

Community Outreach Activities

The MVPC works closely with various organizations throughout the community. This involves visiting minority communities, meeting with service organizations, and networking to promote use of the various programs and services available to today's' veterans. Stand downs, Pow Wow, community town hall meetings, and focus groups enable the MVPC to remain current on issues that affects the provision of services and benefits.
