James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital - Tampa, Florida

Accreditation and Achievements

James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital has received a number of accreditations and awards. Some of our notable accomplishments include —

First Magnet Award

In March 2001, James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital was the first VA hospital nationwide to receive the Magnet Award — the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s national benchmark for quality nursing care. As a Magnet hospital, JAHVH is recognized as a leader in nursing care. It is one of only four in the VA and one of 342 health care organizations worldwide to receive the prestigious designation. The facility achieved Magnet re-designation in 2005 and 2009 for all care delivery sites, including ambulatory care settings and nursing homes.

Excellence in accreditation

James A. Haley is a Clinical Referral Level 1 facility and was fully accredited by the Joint Commission in 2007. The laboratory and research services are also fully accredited. Additionally, JAHVH is the only VA hospital with 11 rehabilitation programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

Our Chest Pain Center is one of 20 accredited in Florida and one of 187 in the country.

Most Advanced Patient Records System

The VA is on the cutting-edge of technology. Our all-electronic patient medical records system is the most advanced in the country. Every one of VA’s facilities is linked to a national database, and every patient test, medication and interaction is recorded. When Hurricane Katrina veterans were evacuated to Tampa from the VA hospital in New Orleans, their records were immediately available in our computers.

Superiority in Research

Our staff are driven and dedicated to their causes. From their efforts come these results —

  • Dr. John Toney co-authored a landmark Shingles study in 2005 which showed a new vaccine prevented about half the cases of the painful nerve and skin infection.
  • A team led by researcher and physician Robert J. Henning, M.D., found stem cells obtained from human umbilical cord blood could significantly reduce the effects of heart attacks in rats, even when administered up to 24 hours after the heart attack. This is the first in the nation.
  • The team of Drs. Fiona Crawford and Michael Mullin identified the first genetic causes of Alzheimer’s Disease.
  • Dr. David Vesely discovered three heart hormones that treat congestive heart and kidney failure in humans. After his wife died of breast cancer, Dr. Vesely expanded his laboratory research to cancer and found two of the hormones he discovered also kill cancer cells — even the terminal kind. His latest research, which could potentially lead to a life-saving treatment for cancer, could be starting human trials soon.
