About the Program
Social Work at James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital is an integral part of health care. We help veterans and their families with problems associated with the stress of an illness.
We have about 90 master’s degree-qualified social workers serving in all program areas at the main hospital and outlying clinics in Tampa Bay.
Social workers in the Tampa VA system put quality first for every patient and family member, and their goal is to exceed patients’ expectations. Social work functions include —
- comprehensive psychosocial assessments
- development of treatment plans, in coordination with interdisciplinary treatment teams
- coordination of services across episodes of care, including community services
- patient and family education
Services Offered
Social work offers counseling —
- to veterans with drug, alcohol and emotional problems
- to help veterans and their families understand and adjust to an illness or disability
- to veterans and family members who want to prepare advance directives and durable powers of attorney for health care or finances
- to help veterans and their families cope with terminal illness
- to family members about legal issues such as commitment and guardianship
- to help veterans obtain financial and educational benefits
- to help veterans find health care and housing
