About the Program
Here at the Tampa VA, we provide both inpatient and outpatient care including specialty care such as chronic pain rehabilitation and We are one of four national polytrauma rehabilitation centers in the United States.
Inpatient Services
Rehabilitation is a dynamic process providing comprehensive services for persons with disabilities to improve health, well-being and attain maximum physical, social, psychological and vocational potential for useful and productive activity. The comprehensive program at James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital offers the following inpatient services:
- Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program
The CPRP is an award winning, comprehensive, inpatient chronic pain treatment program established in 1988 to help veterans with chronic pain cope with their condition. We have been designated a VA “Clinical Program of Excellence” for pain treatment and are the only Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities accredited inpatient pain treatment center in the VA system.
- Kinesiotherapy Services
Provide treatment programs to enhance functional capacity including: wheelchair/seating mobility clinic; driver training; amputation care clinic; therapeutic pool; and basic mobility skills.
- Occupational Therapy
Evaluation of functional ability in the area of self-care, providing training to increase independence in activities of daily living; assessment of the need for adaptive equipment; assistance in the adjustment to altered mental, social and physical status.
- Physical Therapy Services
Evaluation, treatment and instruction on gait, functional mobility, range of motion, strength and balance.
- Recreational Therapy
Enhancement or restoration of physical and/or mental functioning to the highest degree possible by developing individualized programs to improve quality of life.
- Social Work Services
Coordination of discharge planning; facilitation of community referrals; liaisons between families and the rehabilitation team providing counseling regarding psychosocial, financial and vocational implications of disability.
- Speech Pathology Services
Evaluation and treatment of disorders of speech, language, voice, cognition and swallowing.
- Transitional Rehabilitation
Program components include inpatient rehabilitation, on- and off-site transitional residential living, day treatment programs as well as follow up clinics and counseling services.
- Vocational Rehabilitation
Provides education to available services and resources, assist clients in accessing those services and provides liaison to outside agencies, organizations and funding sources for continuing care and services.
Outpatient Services
Many services are available from the outpatient program at James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital. Several of the services are similar to those available as inpatient services but have been designed for outpatients.
- Cardiac Rehabilitation
A 12-week program for patients with known, or at high-risk for, ischemic heart disease or cardiomyopathy of any cause. A structured seminar program for patients and families is provided as well as a weekly support group.
- Kinesiotherapy Driver Training Program
Provides assistance in the selection of an appropriate vehicle, adaptive and operational equipment.
- Kinesiotherapy Preservation/Amputation Care Treatment Foot Screening Clinic (PACT)
Screening, education, recommendations for appropriate foot wear and orthotic devices to prevent ulceration and amputation in the diabetic patient.
- Kinesiotherapy Seating and Mobility Clinic
Evaluation for those in need of specialty seating systems and/or manual or powered wheeled mobility.
- Kinesiotherapy Therapeutic Pool Program
Utilization of therapeutic pool services to help develop al components of physical fitness including cardio-respiratory, endurance, flexibility, muscle strength, balance and coordination, perceptual motor development, and body composition.
- Occupational Therapy

Adaptive Sports
The JAHVH Adaptive Sports Program was developed when the need for active involvement in adaptive sports, outdoor recreation and fitness programs grew for our service members returning from the current war with severe neurological and physical injuries.
